Language Fun
HOL is full of people from many countries in the world. These differences make the language used by us different, but of course that doesn't prevent us from making friends here, where all of us are united by English. However, have you ever been curious about languages from other countries? Now, this thread exists to share and learn new languages. Especially for those of you who like to learn new languages or like to travel, this might be your favorite place!
You can reply to this post with your favorite words or sentences in other languages, important phrases useful for foreigners, etc. But please remember to keep everything according to HOL-rules. And please use Latin Characters when writing so all of us can read them easily.
You can reply to this post as the example below;
Word(s): Senang bertemu denganmu
Meaning: Nice to meet you
Language: Indonesian

Re: Language Fun
One of the most fun things about Finnish is the way words and even proper names change places when used as different parts of a sentence. For example, the founder of my own house - Slytherin is named Salazar Luihuinen, with the house itself being named Luihuinen.
But is that what the Sorting Hat says? No, not at all! When you get Sorted into a House, you have to use the translative case (which means essentially you're becoming of that House), which has an associated ending "-ksi" (pronounced like the ending "-xy" in English). And when you start with a word or name ending in "-nen", that always becomes "-se" before applying the ending (well, except for the partitive case, where you use "-sta"). So, this means that whenever the Finnish Sorting Hat calls someone into my House, it will do so by saying Luihuiseksi!
In Silvana's proposed format:
Word(s): Luihuinen (nominative case); Luihuiseksi (translative case)
Meaning: Slytherin (as a name); Slytherin (when Sorting)
Language: Finnish
