Title - The Berry Pickers
Author - Amanda Peters
Genre - Historical Fiction
Book Bout Prompt - A story within a story
Short Summary - A Mi"kmaq family from Nova Scotia arrive in Maine for the seasonal blueberry picking season. The youngest daughter, Ruthie, disappears from the blueberry field one day leaving the family distraught and grieving for years. The Mi"kmaq family search for the truth hoping to find Ruthie one day. In another family, a young girl hunts to find out about a family secret.
Review - This was the book I couldn't wait to read this summer. It definitely lived up to the hype I had heard about it. The story is written in two prespective, one from Joe, the older brother of Ruthie, who was supposed to be watching her when she disappeared. The other POV is of Norma, a girl who always felt there was something that her parents were not telling her. The chapters were on the long side, but they kept my interest and my mind wondering what was going to happen next. There are some dark subjects within the story, such as kidnapping, drinking problems and miscarriages. For these subjects I would recommend this book to an older reader. All in all, if you want a sort of who done it, this might be the book for you.
