The Book Club cruises with Beaches, and Nautical, and Pirates in June!

Here in Between the Pages, your challenge is this: while there are a lot of pirate movies out ... have you read any books in which pirates are an active part of the story? Have you read any of the histories of some of the pirates, or read books of fiction (or even science fiction-fantasy -- remember those space pirates!) or any stories at all where a pirate, or a pirate ship, plays a significant role?

I remember, of course, The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure by William Goldman, which featured the Dread Pirate Roberts. "I spent the last few years building up an immunity to iocane powder!"

You are welcome to write about your book, or post a picture about the book and its contents. The graphic does not have to be original, but be sure to give credit to whoever created it.

Your write-up needs to be at least 200 words to count towards Beans (and any possible award)! If you post a graphic, please keep it to 600x600 or smaller, and write a brief description underneath what the graphic depicts.

You will receive 20 Beans when you post. Any replies in here, through the school year, will be credited towards a possible award. As always, please keep to HOL appropriate sources for your post.

There is no deadline as such for these prompts but if you’d like it to count towards your chance of earning the award for a specific year, we’ll need it by the end of that school year. If you’re comfortable sharing, then post below. If not, email your story to us via hol.bookclub @ gmail.com (without the spaces).

Pirate Pond

This story is about Rosie the Raw pirate. What Rosie does is Rosie gets off of the ship and goes on to the land and steals stuff. Today, it was very shaky and Rosie kept falling to the floor. Then, it got smoother and they stopped. So, she went out her little trap door and fell right into the ocean because she thought they had landed on an island. But they had stopped in the middle of the ocean because there were animals. She swam as fast as she could but her trap door didn't get closed so the pirate ship got filled with water and began to sink lower and lower and lower. Finally Rosie reached a little island called Pine Place Park. First thing she did was go to the little gift shop and got herself a hoodie with the logo on it and black sneakers and violet jeans. Then, she put those on. Then she got a book called A Good Kind of Trouble. Then she left the gift shop, slamming the door behind her. That automatically locked the doors, trapping the cashier inside. Then, Rosie stomped to a bench and started in on her book. Rosie had a scowl on her face but slowly that disappeared. First she saw someone that was wearing the exact same outfit as her walking a pug. Then, she saw a cat which jumped up on the bench next to her. Then it climbed into her lap. Then, a golden retriever walked by and she got to pet it. After she saw the golden retriever, she had a big grin on her face. She decided to name the stray cat Kaya the Kitty. Then, Kaya and her walked down to the pond where they sat and watched the water ripple.

Treasure Island by R.L. Stevenson is certainly one of the books in which pirates are an active part of the story. The story is about the protagonist who is a mere boy, Jim Hawkins, who works at his family's inn. A one-legged seafaring man becomes the source of dread and starts off the events of the story. The novel is about a secret buried treasure that is found through a location marked as X on the map. The boy's companion and mentor is a doctor from his own land. They face many troubles at sea when they set sail to retrieve the treasure, and their troubles include a pirate mutiny. The gory details of the book are quite unsavory at places. The novel is a story of greed, violence resulting from greed, broken promises, and of betrayal and revenge, as well as the boy's attempts to seek redemption and fix his morals. There are glorious battles with pirates in the story. The book is a perfect example of how greed of treasure can lead people towards bloody destinies. A part of the treasure is ultimately never found, but the protagonist Jim refuses to go back to the island, pronouncing the island cursed, and choosing his peace over greed.
