Wonder: May Book Discussion

Post by Prof. Amy Lupin »

When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.
This month we'll be reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio. It follows the story of Auggie, a young boy with a facial deformity who attends school for the first time. We learn about the challenges he encounters as well as how he is able to thrive in spite of them.

We have put together a rough guideline for the month, but you're welcome to read the book at your own pace:

1-7 May: Ordinary (Chapter 1) - Names (Chapter 31)
8-14 May: A Tour of the Galaxy (Chapter 32) - Partners (Chapter 63)
15-21 May: Detention (Chapter 64) - What I Miss Most (Chapter 95)
22-31 May: Extraordinary, but No One There to See (Chapter 96) - The Walk Home (Chapter 123)

We'll also be providing a question or two to spark off the discussion in each post but feel free to ignore them. We want to hear your thoughts while reading, however small or obvious you think they sound!

The above quote is taken from one of Auggie's teachers, Mr Brown, who gives his students monthly precepts. What do you think of this one in particular? Are there any precepts you try live your life by?

If inspiration strikes you, please feel free to share some of your own fan fiction, poetry, stories or fan art.

If you have any suggestions for future book discussions, please drop us an email at hol.bookclub @ gmail.com (with the spaces removed).
