When I was in second grade, the Prisoner of Azkaban came out on shelves. My friends were talking about the new hit book series of Harry Potter, the kid wizard. At that time only the first 3 books had come out and I was a reading geek who wanted to read all of them, seeing I was already interested in magic, Halloween, and such fairy tales.
That Christmas, I opened a pretty heavy package first. It turned out my parents had bought me all of the 3 Harry Potter books, and I became very aware how interesting the books actually were. At first, it took me a while to read the books because of my age, but the next year I tried reading them again and found them to be my new favorite books.
By the opening of The Goblet of Fire I had convinced my parents to take me to the midnight book opening at the bookstore. As time went on I read the books over and over bringing me to the opening of the Order of the Phoenix. By this time, now I know that I just adore and love Harry Potter – not just the movies and the books, but the whole idea and story behind it. I just can’t wait until the next!!

My brother had gotten the Norwegian version of book 1 from our aunt and uncle one christmas. However, I took one look at the cover and dismissed it as a stupid children's book. Oh, how wrong I could be...
Now, move to summer, the year 2001. I had just moved back home to my parents, and my life was horribly boring. So one day, I picked up the nearest book, and settled myself outside in the sun to do some reading. This book turned out to be, of course, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. I read the first 2-3 chapters pretty quickly, and then realized that I was actually loving the book. Really loving it.
After this, I read the next two books (also in Norwegian), and realized I was so hooked that I needed the books for myself, but in English. I used the oh-so-wonderful Internet, and found that not only did the online bookstores have the first three books in English, they had a fourth one too! Bliss. Pure bliss.
I now totally submerged myself into the wonderful world of Harry Potter, and I have yet to come back out of it. I pre-ordered OotP, but when it didn't arrive on the day of the release, I went to the nearest store and bought a copy. Two more arrived in the mail the next day...
Later on, I joined HOL, and well, here I am. Most of my friends make fun of me, but I make no point of hiding "what I do". I love everything Harry Potter - the books, the movies, the world in itself...everything! This is one joy in my life that no one will take away from me.

I was very resistant to reading Harry Potter. Not because I thought it wouldn't be a good series, but because EVERYONE was into it, and I hate following the crowd :-)
My niece is in the Navy and was stationed in London, and for Christmas one year she sent me Philosopher's Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Prizoner of Azkaban (the British editions in hardback). I still held off on reading any of them.
When Sorcerer's Stone was about to come out in theaters, my son wanted to see the movie very bad. I finally broke down and read the first book, so I would have some understanding of the movie before we went, still approaching it half-heartedly. Well as soon as I finished Philsopher's Stone, I dove right into COS and POA. I couldn't stop reading them and I wanted to kick myself for not giving in earlier.
Now I read (and re-read) books one through four to my son (OoTP is a bit too much for him still) and we are both obsessed with Harry and his world.

Harry Potter...where to begin...
Well, I'm not sure how long ago it was...maybe a little after PoA came out (the book, not the movie of course). I was running a summer reading program at my local library, when I saw the wait lists for the Harry Potter books. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I managed to get on the list and finally read the Philosopher's (or Sorcerer's) Stone and was amazed. I had been a big fan of the Magic Kingdom books by Terry Brooks, but Harry Potter blew them away. I then read CoS and finally PoA. By then, GoF was out and I received all 4 books for my birthday. When OotP came out, I was glued to it. I took it to work and read it during my breaks, as were many other people where I work. The movies are another story. I become addicted to them, seeing PS in theater twice, CoS 3 times, and twice so far for PoA. My favorite book? PoA because of Sirius, I love him! Favorite movie? CoS, I'm not sure why. This is my life of Harry Potter.

my story is very simple to tell:
I went into library to get some comics and at the front desk lay all the Harry Potter books. I was never interested in the Harry Potter Hype before, but I wanted to find out, why everyone read it. The result was, that I took some of the comics and the first Harry Potter book.
But the book lay on my desk for several weeks until I began to read it. And then it all startet... I didn't have enough money to buy the books, so I had to lend them from the library. Unfortunately I couldn't get them, because somebody already lent them. I couldn't wait such a long time, so I had to read the third book before the second book /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />
However, I startet collecting Harry Potter things( Bertie Botts Beans, Harry Potter socks etc.) and of course I bought book 5 in english first ( I am from Germany ;-) ) and that was a big help in my english class test ^^

How did I get involved into Harry Potter, eh? Well, it all began...
Summer vacation had just started and I was already bored. I had done everything there was to do. They were only showing reruns on television, I had watched all of the movies, played all of my video games, and at that time I wasn't really into computers. I was just sitting in our porch, lazing around, when I spotted a book. It's front cover was a little bent, and it was stained, but otherwise it was okay. It was the first Harry Potter book, of course. So I picked it up and started reading it. I was hooked from the first word. I found out later my brother had read it for school, and bought it. It was that fateful moment when my life changed forever.
I have no idea why I read it. The main reason was probably boredom, but the picture of Harry on the front cover, riding a broom, and the other things, like Fluffy, grabbed my interest. I kind of casually glanced down and then shot my gaze directly back, interested in the cover. It is always a thrill when new books come out that I like, and each of the Harry Potter books were and are the most anticipated.
By the way, it was the summer the first book came out, whenever that was.
It might be a little late to get points, but I will atleast have it in my records.

I admit that the first time I read Harry Potter I thought it was boring, although I only got through the first few pages of the first chapter. I should have known, as a reader, not to judge a book by a slow beginning. My sister had read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and found it fascinating. She insisted that I give it another try. That same day I picked up the book and read the entire thing. The story caught me, like a spider, catching her prey in her web. I eagerly read through the second and third books almost right after.
After that, I couldn't wait for the 4th book to be published. I had never been waiting for a book in a series to be released to the public before. Most other books I read were classics, and had been published a while ago. The summer that the 4th book came out, my friend received it as a birthday gift. We were on our way to a lake in New Hampshire and we read the first chapter on the car ride there. I was hooked. When I got home, my family had the book, but I had to wait for my sister to finish reading it! Unlike with the first book, this bothered me, because by then I was eagerly waiting to discover more about the famous Harry Potter, and what would happen next.
The irony of my story is that my sister had read all the books (up to book 5) before me, and it didn't bother me the summer book 1 was published, but when GoF was released I was annoyed that she had to get through 800 pages of magic before me. Another irony is that the first time I picked up the original book I found it boring, and now I wish Hogwarts and Harry Potter were real, and that I was a witch. And I really owe the books a lot, especially introducing me to this great community of people at HOL.

Hello, I am going to tell you the story of how I got into Harry Potter. It was a while ago, when i was still in elementary school, A friend of mine came up to me and he was holding a Harry Potter book. I had never heard of the books before then, but I was very interest in reading, I loved and still love to read. So I asked him what the book was about. He told me that it was about a wizard, i stopped him right there. I said, "That book is evil." And didn't let him say a word more on the topic. A while later I was at another friends house and he was playing a video game that i had absolutly no interest in. So i started looking around his room for something to read, but all he had was Harry Potter. I was ignorant and still thought of the book as evil. I asked my friend why he had the books, He said, "They are very very good, you would like them." I doubted him, but I had nothing else to read, so I sat down on the bed and read these lines, "Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonsense." I read those lines and I could not put the book down. I begged and begged my friend to let my borrow his copy, finally he boke down and let me borrow it, for the rest of the time I was there i didn't do anything but read Harry Potter, when i got home thats all I did. Then I convinced my mother to take me to Barnes & Noble, where i bought the First and Second Harry Potter books in Paper Back. I now have all the books in Paper Back (except for the Fifth, which I do not belive has come out in Paper Back yet, correct me if im wrong) and in Hard back (I have the fifth in Hard Back) My first book in Paper Back has been read so many times (all by me, I dont let any one touch that one, it was the first I had, so I treat it like a first edition) that it is falling apart and needs to be re-bound and well lets just say that my hard backs are in much better condition than my paperbacks, there is only one exception, my fouth book, the hard back is in better condition because I bought it first (the day it came out) well, that is my story that is how I got into Harry Potter, I did not think I would like them and now they are my favorite books and get very angry when people insult them when they have not read them...yes I know I am being a little bit of hypacryite, but the way I see it, I saw the light. /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />
Thank you all /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
All stories have been added to the Yearbooks, and everyone won points for their house.
This contest closes for HOL 2003/04 now
You can add your story here, but no points will be awarded over the summer break. They will count for HOL 2004/05, but only if you are an active student then (signed up for classes and the like). The contest resumes next schoolyear.

For years I had carefully avoided all the Harry Potter hype. I mean, come on, I was no little kid. It was about the time that the first movie came out, that I fell head over heels in love. I was skipping a particularly boring lesson by hanging out in the only room of the library few college students ever enter, the kid's room. (After all, they have the most comfy sofas.) Laying there basking in the glory of my idleness, I happened to glance at down at an open book. Lazily my eyes read over some of the words. The description was wonderful, the flow of dialogue so natural, I was intrigued. Just then a familiar name caught my eye. "Harry Potter," I said startled from my restful state. Looking around to make sure no one was watching me I flipped the book to page one and began reading.
Two hours had passed by the time my boyfriend came and found me. I was so engulfed I hadn't even heard anyone walk in. Snatching the book from me he laughed, "So, has Maggi turned a new leaf. After all the complaining you'd been doing about all this 'Harry Potter rubbish'." Blushing scarlett I grabbed the book back from him. "I just decided to see for myself, that's all," I said indignately. "Well, you just missed our history quiz, Ms. Arceneaux," he said in a mocking tone, "and I suggest if you don't want to miss biology, you'll hurry along to the science building. I think you're late already." Looking up at a clock for the first time since I had started reading I gasped, tossed the book to Deme and begged him to check it out for me as I was running out the door.
It took me about two weeks to finish the first three books (and bought a set for myself, no small feat on a college student's budget); by that time I was a full blown addict. I went and watched the movie, drove most of my friends crazy talking about Muggles and Potions, and started looking on the web for all the things I could find about J.K. Rowling. In time, of course, some of my fanatic behavior has worn away (for which my friends are infinately grateful), but I can still read all the books back to back, and I still enjoy a good conversation about anything Harry Potter related.

odd stories im reading, but good ones hehe.
it was early 6th grade year and my friends were ALL into it. i was REALLY skeptical, afraid it would turn out like the original Lord of the Rings fad and people read it and then dump it off as "boring". (until now where people only read it because of the movies) I was going out of town for a funeral (my granfather died whom i was very close to) i was more irritable than normal because of his death and when we were waiting for the flight to board my mum took me to a book shop and she saw Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone ( It was an international book sotre so i bought the brit. version first) and picked it up. She looked at it, "Is this the book everyone is so hyped up about? It looks dumb to me. Most fantasy is weird anyway." I looked at her and being the hypocritcal teen who never agrees with my parents, i defended it telling her all my friends liked it so it must be good and i bought it just to "show her". *laughs hard*
needless to say i sat on the plane sometime later around 12 pm (we had a late flight) and stared at this book i never wanted. i figured screw it, i bought it i might as well read it and i started to read. by the end of the 8 hour flight i had read it all and was preceeding to read it again (i was on page 6 again) and i had to get off the plane. We passed another book shop in the airport in Ohio and i begged my dad to get me the other two. From then on i was hooked and i have never come off it. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I was eleven when Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone first came out. Odd, isn't it? I'd been very sick with tonsillitis, and extremely bored. There's only so much TV one can watch, you know. Anyway, my nose was completely clogged, my throat ached so badly that breathing through my mouth was nearly impossible, and I became disoriented every time I moved, courtesy of light-headedness. And this was all during a holiday from school!
I was all set to down a bottle of Mum's sleeping tablets, when my father came home early from work with a book: the Philosopher's Stone. Now being a rational, mature, clear-headed eleven-year-old (not bloody likely!), I flawlessly gushed over the book just to please Dad, having no intention whatsoever to read it, even after perusing the back cover. What did I need with a baby book? I was much too grown up to bother with things like that.
Five days, a visit to the family physician, and a bottle of antibiotics later, I went back to school, and suffered through everyone making over their lovely holiday. And what did I have to show for mine? Nothing but a stupid baby book. Which I told no one about, of course.
Approximately two years later, when I was thirteen, my father got a job transfer to America, and I was totally miserable. In middle school (The middle of what, exactly?), I was mocked for my accent, my clothes, my eye colour, practically everything I did was wrong or didn't measure up to their standard. I was (and still am) very autonomous, so none of that really mattered. I liked being by myself. That, and I got them back.
So that was how it went for a while: they harassed me, I got them in trouble with a higher authority. One day, Mum was late picking me up, so I was just lounging on the bench. A girl sat down next to me, and a book fell out of her bag. When I saw what it was, I was shocked. A girl my age read those baby books? "I can't believe you actually read those," I said. "Tell me, does your mummy still change your diaper?" She smiled at me and dared me to read one, then I could torment her 'til she graduated if I didn't like it.
Well, I'll admit it, I don't like to lose a challenge, so I went home, dug in boxes for about four hours, and finally found my dusty copy of Philosopher's Stone. I bellowed down the stairs not to expect me for dinner, and got comfortable in my beanbag, prepared for the dullest evening ever.
I stayed up all night reading the bloody thing. The next day, I met up with the girl, and mumbled something about how it wasn't so bad. She didn't even say 'I told you so'. She just said her name was Elizabeth, and asked me if I wanted to sit with her at lunch. I still had my image to uphold, so I said no, but we met up after school. We've been friends ever since, though I don't really know how she can stand me sometimes.
And to think that now I'm more obsessed than she is!

How I got into HP:
Well I think I was about 13 or 14, the 1st Harry Potter movie came out. I had never read Harry so I wasn't with all the hype, as a matter of fact I HATED Harry and his stupid little powers, I never understood it and I didnt want to like something everybody else did. <Blame it on the hormones =P>
Then the school holidays rolled around, I was going to my dads house for the whole 2 weeks I had off. There was absolutly nothing to do /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="<_<" border="0" alt="dry.gif" />
So I thought I'd go snooping in my little brothers stuff to find something, i saw he was reading PS, i looked at it for a second and then opened it.
By the very first words i was hooked, I couldn't bare to part with the paperback, leaving all my anti-potter thoughts in the back of my head I was spun into a wonderous web of magic, emotions and pure excitment.
I started to collect every Harry Potter picture i could find, keeping them in a old chocolate box. Then I found out Chocolate Frogs were out when I went to the store and to my surprise they came with collectable cards. I was over the moon, while my eyes were closing and i was drifting into another HP dream i promised myself that i would collect all of them.
Once i had read the first book over and over again, i thought it was time for a change. My dad was heading into town so i asked him if he could pick up the second Harry Potter book for me. He said yes! I was so excited. But when he returned home he didn't have CoS instead he had 3 Chocolate frogs and a copy of GoF.
So being the HUGE Harry fan I read it, not knowing what was going on because I missed out on the other two books.
The holidays ended in a flash and I was all alone with out any potter anywhere. The movie had ended at the cinemas and the internet sites were getting a bit old. I was slowly getting over my Potter craze......until! My mum's friend came around with CoS and PoA, my mum told her to bring them. I spent all that day and night reading them and the next couple of weeks reading them over and over again.
The years past, i got a wand made for me <its real cool!> I got my dad into HP, CoS came out at the movies and I was the first person to set foot into the cinema and the first in line to see it <i had reserved my tickets a couple of weeks earlier> So that must make me the biggest fan in my city hmmmm? Awesome!
CoS came out on DVD, I got that and PS watched them to my hearts content.
And waited, I waited for what seemed like forever for JK to finish the 5th book and when it did come out my whole HP craze started right from the begining again.
Sad because my fav character died, angry because You-Know-Who and Cheerfull from reading all the silly things Ron does and the way Sirius treated Kreater.
Now Im waiting for the time to pass for when the HBP comes out....Im almost dying it's taking so long, Its almost like waiting for the HOL Class Sign-ups to open! /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

How I Became a Harry Potter Freakatic (aka The Story of My Life)
I'm ashamed to admit that I was not the first person in my house to read Harry Potter. I do, however, consider myself the first real addict.
My dad owned a book store for about twelve years or so and once in a while he'd bring home books for us to read. One night when I was about 12 (not sure what year, but PoA had already been released) he brought home Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for my mom to read to my younger brother as a bedtime story.
My mom picked me up from somewhere, play practice or a friends house, the day after reading the first few chapters. While she drove my mom told me all about Dudley, how unbelievably large he was and how his first word was "shan't" and all. It seemed kind of funny, but I wasn't too hooked.
At home everyone was laughing about Harry Potter this and Harry Potter that. I felt left out. So I took the book and read it. I couldn't put it down. I read the first three books as quickly as I could lay my hands on them. The fourth and fifth, when released, where treated in the same manner. Although the fifth was more difficult because at every "hem hem" I had to surpress the desire to chuck the book against the wall.
Now, although I'm disappointed with the movies, I laugh at my naive fears of having to leave dear Harry behind when entering highschool. What was I thinking!? Harry Potter is not for children, but for ... me. Harry grows with me. How could I ever desert him? I get more and more out of the books every time I read them. JK Rowling, you're my hero.

When i was in third grade, Harry Potter and the Sorceror's stone had recently been released. I went to a scholastic book fair at my school, and my sister reccomended that I buy the book. I bought it, and read about a quarter of it the first night. I was hooked on the book right away, and finished it in three days. When the Chamber of Secrets came out, i bought it right away and read it. However, come fifth grade, the Prisoner of Azkaban was out, but i did not buy it. I never bought it, but I saw the first Harry Potter movie in sixth grade. I borrowed Prisoner of Azkaban from my friend and read half of it in sixth grade, but when i was to the flight of the fat lady, she asked if she could have it back. I didn't end up reading it until this past year, eighth grade, but when I did, i immediatly read Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix right away. I recently went to the Prisoner of Azkaban movie line party, and I can't wait for the Half-blood prince to come out. I also plan to go to the Goblet of Fire line party in 2005!

In the year of 2001, the fourth book arrived here to Brazil, so I bought it and decded to read, but at that time, I haven't read any of the other books. So, I didn't understand ANYTHING (as you can imagine /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> ). There was a Qudditch Cup, and I didn't even know what that was! So, when the fifth book was coming, I decided to do it right. So, I bought the first, de second and the third and I was waiting to te Order of the Phoenix. When I finished the third book, I was a Harry Potter maniac /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> !!! I bought the fifth book over the internet.... Now, I can't imagine my life without Harry Poter's books /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> !!!

Well, it had to have been in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade. I had heard of Harry Potter. At the time I thought it was stupid, hogwash, I had no intention of reading it /mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="
" border="0" alt="mad.gif" /> . So, after getting through all the other books I liked, I started book 1. BORING! /huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="huh.gif" /> But then as I continued into the book I was being reeled in like a fish caught by a fishing pole. J.K. had got me. She put me in her bucket with the other million fishes she had caught. Now I'm a big fan, and have found MY way to Hogwarts.
