The murderer must have planned this for days, if not weeks, ahead; what do you think the planning involved?
Why do you think would someone want to harm our poor Casse?
If you were the murderer, how would you murder Cassie?
If you could pick something, but chicken dance, what would you turn Cassie into?
I think the planning started when it was announced that there would be a Ball. Why would someone want to do this terrible thing? Oh, that's easy-peasy. Sheer jealousy because it was announced that Cassie would be announced as the Queen of the Ball. I think that it is likely that not only was the evil do-er a part of the House of Ravenclaw, but herself wanted to be Queen .... of everything. Why not? What an opportunity to do a dastardly deed! What are the likelihoods that the perpetrator of such a deed was, in fact, part of those who was in charge of the Ball, how it was set up, where it would be, the decorations, foods, lighting -- all of it. As for planning -- it wouldn't really be that difficult would it, to turn the Butterfly into a stone chicken. A judicious mix of the 'duro' charm spoken after some polyjuice potion (with a chicken feather in it) was mixed in a drink (and drunk by Cassie) and the tarantallegra hex spoken before the duro charm = instant stone dancing chicken.
There would be time to develop the polyjuice potion because the Ball took weeks in the planning. A quick slip of it into whatever Cassie was drinking, some subterfuge of talking while she drank it (to make sure she finished whatever it was she was drinking), a signal to the band to play their pre-arranged 'high flight' dance and voila! (I'd say "Mischief Managed" but really it isn't appropriate even if true.)
If I could pick something to turn Cassie into, not chicken dance, a penguin on top of a television set instantly pops into my mind.
