Back in the Day ...
In 2003, then-Head of House Prof. Laffengraff (or "Laffy" as she was and always will be known!) wrote the following, detailing the fledgling days of HOL Ravenclaw. (It's been edited a bit to bring certain positions up to date.)
Early Staff
It seemed at first that every Professor wanted to be in Ravenclaw, and why not? What Prof. wouldn't want to be associated with intelligence and wit? :-) So besides myself and Prof. Argumentus, there was Prof. Samuel Dumbledore, Prof. Artimus Zeln, Prof. Illyaster Neverwhere, Prof. Romulus Xanthos, Prof. Petra Sportiva, Prof. Angelia Oort, Prof. Clinton Swish and Prof. Sollarna Fumbleknot. There were some other Professors, but they "dropped dead" during the first term so I don't remember who they were.
Prof. Xanthos was Quidditch coach and Prof. Neverwhere was cheerleading coach. Argie, Xan, Nevvie and myself made up what became known as the G-4 (Great 4). Most major decisions were made by this group.
For a variety of reasons, by the end of the first year Zeln, Oort, Swishy and Fumbly had left, and Nevvie and Xan left by the end of the second year. Prof. Kara Wreibyn, Prof. Eyre Lasgalen and Prof. Davnen Graywords, former Ravenclaw students, became Ravenclaw Professors at the beginning of the second year. (Kara became Head of Slytherin for a time at the end of the second year.)
Although most have since left, student Heureka Inventatool became Prof. Tricky Doubt soon after, and students Valerian Mandragora and Rhiannon Llewellyn added Professor to their names. In 2003, Angel A. Elendili and Melangell Wright both became Professors.
Prof. Angelus Darklost, Prof. Audiaa Martin, Prof. Charles Pendragon, Prof. Lara Pandette, Prof. Mallory Reynolds, Prof. Mark Dupont, Prof. Rhiannon Llewellyn, and Prof. Ulol Kimil make up the current list of Ravenclaw Professors.
[After enjoying the longest tenure of any Head of House in HOL, Prof. Laffengraff resigned her post. Prof. Argumentus (now known to one and all as Prof. Chris, Duke of Bury), longtime Deputy Head of House, has also stepped down. After serving as Head Prefect, Prof. Rhiannon Llewellyn is now Ravenclaw Head of House, with Prof. Ulol Kimil serving as Deputy HoH.]
The Fledgling Roost
In the beginning of HOL, the main forum and all of the House forums were on rapidforum. Much rich history was contained there, including the first of the questions we've now heard a zillion times: "How do I get a broom?" "What classes are you taking?" "How do classes work?" "How do I become a Prefect?"
During the first year, all Common Rooms were open to all Professors. Also during the first year, we could earn intrahouse points, bu creating our own projects and earning points without other Houses' participation. Because of this, we needed a secret place to discuss our plans, and so the Roost was born on another rapidforum. When intrahouse points, and thus the need for secrecy, became a thing of the past, the Roost became overgrown and empty from neglect.
Our Common Room, in the meantime, was having problems. So during the summer of 2002, Rhiannon Llewellyn and I [Prof. Laffy] renovated the Roost, and that August we made the Roost our official Common Room until the Spring of 2003, when it was moved to its current location.
A Brief History of Prefects
(The majority of this section was written by Head Girl Emerita Leah Samson.)
Let's travel back in time a bit, to the summer of 2001. It's September and Prefects, at this time, were elected, not appointed. So to speak it was more of a popularity vote, which is why it was discontinued in the selection of new Prefects. Nonetheless, there were ten who campaigned for this position, nominated by Laffy, and five would become Ravenclaw's first generation Prefects: Rhiannon Llewellyn, Thadius Crucio, Dee Delacour, Unique Fairfax, and myself, Leah Samson.
I remembered filling out a Prefect scenario survey, answering questions and notifying newbies during my campaign for Prefect. When I was elected, I got to see a whole new body of HOL - the working, behind-the-scenes, crew. Then, Ravenclaw was less organized as we are now - there were no nests until later in the year, but yet we managed, because of our Prefects. Rhiannon was a constant, omnipotent presence in Ravenclaw, bolting PM's at me (*wink*), aiding everyone from newbies to our Head of House, and generally being helpful. Dee provided class and entertainment to our bunch, and had such positive energy it was hard not to notice the change in atmosphere whenever she was around. Unique, well, who could ever forget her floor-length hair and Scabbers onna stick? I miss those. And Thadius, I never really thought he was 12, as his file stated - no way, he was in fact in his mid-twenties, and this webdesigning wizard and dazzling worker. And me, well ... I'll leave you to your imaginations what I did. Or someone else can tell you. But it was seriously great fun, I still remember those primitive times, the fresh and new of HOL.
When nests did form, things became well-oiled in Ravenclaw - we had a system of consistency (you see now the other Houses adopting our idea - we were the FIRST, it was LAFFY's brilliant idea!). Another brilliant idea of Laffy's was the system of PiT's (and you once again, see other houses adopt this idea with Apprentice prefects), or Prefects in Training. My first Prefect in Training was Kimaire. I suppose she did pull a few useful tricks off me, as in colour coding the nest datasheet - hehe, that was back when I had a nest. New Prefects emerged - I like to call them Generation 1 and a half: Ron Thompson, Angelina Lupin, Sir Psycho Flea, and Conary Barclay. Ron was as quick to smile as he was to lose his temper, and he was very passionate about Ravenclaw. So big on House spirit. Angelina was the house artist, winning the Wing Painter award the first year, always thinking up new projects for Ravenclaw. Flea was eventually promoted to Headboyship and Conary became our master of websites.
Finally, at the end of year one, most of our Prefects faded. The only original left was Rhiannon, as I had been promoted to Head Girl and relieved of most of my Ravenclaw Prefect duties. Even Generation 1.5 was mostly missing but, thanks to the PiT system, we had Generation 2 Prefects emerge and continue the Ravenclaw legacy: Odysseus Moody, Kimaire Seloiro, Alicia Granger, Malien Clementielle, and Celestia Starr. Ody is the ultimate caring, beautiful, sweetest person alive. Kimaire is a dedicated worker in all things, whatever she sets her mind to. Celestia was a constant force, always there to help someone, and Malien was our peacemaker, the calming in all our stormy conflicts at HOL (there aren't many in Ravenclaw!). Lastly, Alicia was our happy-go-lucky, smiling, versatile Prefect.
In the years to follow, many more names were added to the list of Prefects, including Anarya Tasarin, Tinuviel Undomiel, Hari Granger, Sayuri Anderson, and Sindor Aloyarc. The current roster includes Chloe Fairchilde, Cassandra Lobiesk, Leora Lobel, Maya Winters, Momoko Asakura, Sophia Manasa, and Prefects Emeriti Hari O'Duibhleargain , Kimaire Seloiro, Malien Clementielle, Sindor Aloyarc, and Tinuvie Levante [Undomiel].
