Prompt: I Declare

Post by Prof. Sky Alton »

This month, we’re talking about love in the Book Club. One very dramatic aspect of love (and one that can be especially fun to write) is a declaration of love: the point where a characters feelings are so strong that they just have to express them. Sometimes these can be beautiful speeches or quietly tender moments. Other times, they happen while everything else seems to be going wrong and might not even look like ‘I love you’ at all. Think about where we first find out about Tonks’ feelings for Remus or when Ron’s prioritising the safety of the house elves causes him and Hermione to kiss. These are declarations of love, though there isn’t a beautiful metaphor in sight.

For this prompt, I’d love you to write a story (200 words or more) about a declaration of love. It could be a classically romantic one or something far more emotionally raw. Is it romantic love or something else? Does it take the characters by surprise or is it something they’ve been building towards for a while? Providing it’s HOL appropriate, it’s entirely your choice.

You’ll earn 20 beans for completing this prompt as well as it counting towards the chance to snag our shiny Quill and Ink award.

There is no deadline as such for these prompts but if you’d like it to count towards your chance of earning the award for a specific year, we’ll need it by the end of that school year. If you’re comfortable sharing, then post below. If not, email your story to us via hol.bookclub @ gmail.com (without the spaces). Oh and remember it’s a good idea to check through your piece carefully for spelling and grammatical errors as they make it harder for people to properly enjoy your work.
