Prompt: Where the Action Is

Post by Prof. Sky Alton »

This month in the Book Club, we’re thinking about thrillers: books that get our hearts racing with their fast pacing and twisty plots. One of the most important aspects of a thriller are the action scenes. These can range from fights to sports events to chases and need to keep a reader on the edge of their seat. You need to provide enough detail that people can follow every move but not so much that the scene slows down. It can be a tricky balance to strike.

This month, I’d like you to write an action scene (of at least 200 words). It could be a duel, a car chase, a rescue, an attack by a monster or something entirely different. Try to make it as exciting and suspenseful as you can. Remember though that everything needs to be HOL appropriate so don’t make it too violent or graphic.

You’ll earn 20 beans for completing this prompt as well as it counting towards the chance to snag our shiny Quill and Ink award.

There is no deadline as such for these prompts but if you’d like it to count towards your chance of earning the award for a specific year, we’ll need it by the end of that school year. If you’re comfortable sharing, then post below. If not, email your story to us via hol.bookclub @ gmail.com (without the spaces). Oh and remember it’s a good idea to check through your piece carefully for spelling and grammatical errors as they make it harder for people to properly enjoy your work.
