Slug & Jiggers Apothecary - Ingredients

Post by Gail Allen »

Slug & Jiggers Apothecary is a very old shop going all the way back to 1207 when it was first established. Recently we've been looking through some of the older boxes holding ingredient descriptions and realised that some of them are a little outdated or simply unreadable since the ink has faded or the parchment crumbled. Therefore we would like for you to write up new versions of these descriptions.

You can write about either a plant, or mineral or anything else that is used as an ingredient in potions-brewing. Remember that since the description will be handed out with the ingredient it should be relatively short, but still have some substance; the minimum is 100 words, or 50 words and an image of the ingredient.

(Feel free to use real world plants etc., or make up your own.)

These flowers are indigenous to Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Turkey, Greece, Italy, and China. They are hardy plants, able to tolerate drought and neglect, and can adapt to a variety of soil conditions. They thrive best, however, in sunlit meadows with rich soil. These plants can be quite deceptive; don't let the pretty, colorful petals lull you into a false sense of peace. Many varieties of the hellebore are, in fact, poisonous, so take care when using them.

The essence of these flowers is used to make a syrup, which acts as an ingredient in several potions, such as the Draught of Peace, Volubilis Potion, and Potion #86, which is extremely toxic. It is also traditionally used to treat such ailments as paralysis, gout, and insanity. Legend has it has that it has even been used to summon demons.

Elderberries are found on many plants, but most commonly come from the Sambuas nigra, or European elder tree. These small, dark purple berries are rich with antioxidants and vitamins that can boost the immune system to help fight off cold, flu, and upper respiratory infections. They are wonderful for your heart, too! These berries can be eaten in raw form or you can use them to make tea, syrup, lozenges, pills, or gummies. A perfect, natural remedy for what ails you, and they taste great!

Peppermint is a mint plant that can be found all over the world, though it is native to Europe and the Middle East. It is known to both Muggles and wizards as a flavouring agent for sweet foods, although its leaves can be brewed as a tea. In potions, its primary use is to counteract the side effects of other potions: for example, adding it to an Elixir to Induce Euphoria will make the drinker less likely to feel the urge to sing or tweak their nose. It also is known to both Muggles and wizards as a soothing agent which can ease pain: therefore it can also be used as an ingredient in healing potions.

Wormwood is a bitter herb. It can be used in many different potions including: Draught of Living Death, Elixir to Induce Euphoria, Healing Potion and Shrinking Solution. The essence of Wormwood can also be taken from this plant. Be careful when using the essence because it can be poisonous if used in large amounts.

Alihotsy leaves are from the Hyena Tree. They are used in potion to induce laughter. They are used in the Laughing Potion and the Alihotsy Draught. They can even be used to flavour desserts,

Warning: Eating the leaves can cause uncontrollable laughter and hysteria. If eaten, eat some Glumbumble Treacle to counter the effects of the Alihotsy leaves.

Devil’s Snare is a magical and intriguing plant. It has the ability to strangle or wrap around anything in its surrounding area that happens to touch it. Devil’s Snare is composed of vines that are sensitive to sense of touch and springy tendrils. Its mass is very soft as well. When the plant entangles someone the harder that person struggles to break free the faster and tighter the plant will bind them, with the goal of choking them. It’s a not common to own this plant, but if you are a skilled Herbologist you will be allowed to work with it. If you do find yourself entangled with the plant all one needs to do, is be calm and relax and the Snare will release its grip. This plant tends to live in a dark, damp environment. Due to this, the plant will stop all movement when placed in bright light and will recoil away from heat of fire.

Gatlokk is a mineral found in highest peaks of Eurasian mountains. It can be found in two states. One of them is an inert state, which resembles an oblong, dark rock with light grey stripes along it. Inert Gatlokk is used in potions that reduce anxiety and induce sleep, like the Sleeping Draught. The second state is its charged state, which happens when the mineral is hit by lightning. The stripes of the rock are electric blue instead of light grey. Charged Gatlokk is used in potions that need to exude a lot of energy, with a similar effect to the Bombarda spell. Charged Gatlokk is very dangerous to keep as only an ounce of the mineral can explode with a force of a hundred Erumpent horns. Lately, St. Mungo's Healers are researching the use of minuscule amounts of charged Gatlokk in reversing the effects of the Duro spell, petrification and permanent Sticking charms.
