Creative Showcase

Post by Prof. Sky Alton »

The Creative Showcase is a space for you to show off your skills with artwork and creative writing.

Guidelines
Submissions to the creative showcase are worth 10 points each. You can submit twice per issue (for a total of 20 points)

Prompt
Each issue will have a fun and unique prompt that you can use as a jumping off point for your creative piece(s).

Artwork
This could include painting, drawing, digital artwork, photography, cartoons, comic strips and the like. You can also submit photos of crafts you’ve created by hand, like sculpture, needlework or even cake decorating.
Your submission must either follow the prompt given or be related to the issue’s theme in some way. Feel free to get creative with how it fits the theme but you must be able to explain it to us if we ask.
Artwork must be entirely your own work. For crafts, it’s okay to use patterns or templates created by other people but we’d like you to credit them if you can.
The topics you choose should be HOL appropriate (suitable for members of all ages). The later Harry Potter books are a good guide for how dark you can go but even then, make sure you’re taking care.
Remember that artworks are worth twice as many points as regular graphics elsewhere in the paper and try to reflect that in the effort you put in.

Artwork Requirements
Your piece must be submitted as a link. Attachments will not be opened. It must have a width of 600 pixels or less and must have a dark border around it if the image itself is relatively light.

Creative Writing
This includes short stories and poetry. If you have an idea that doesn’t quite fall under either of those, chat to us about it.
Your submission must either fit that issues prompt or be related to the issue’s theme in some way. Feel free to get creative with how it fits the theme but you must be able to explain it to us if we ask.
You can write in whatever style you like: first person, second person, third person, epistolary (using letters, emails etc) or anything else you can think of. The same goes for poetry: feel free to use free verse or any other poetic form you like. Remember though that it needs to be easy for people to follow - there will be younger members and people whose first language isn’t English reading your pieces.
We will accept fanfiction, though we’d prefer people to work on original pieces with their own characters and ideas wherever possible. Setting stories in the Wizarding World though is always fine.
The topics you choose should be HOL appropriate (suitable for members of all ages). The later Harry Potter books are a good guide for how dark you can go but even then, make sure you’re taking care.

Creative Writing Requirements
Creative writing submissions must be at least 150 words long for short stories and at least 60 words and 10 lines long for poetry. If your poem has lines that repeat, you'll need to write more than 10.

If you have a creative idea that you’d like to see in the paper that doesn’t neatly slot into artwork or creative writing, discuss it with the editors and we’ll see if we can find a way to include it.
