Points

Post by Prof. Sky Alton »

Here are the points available for each type of submission that you can make to an issue of The Howler. To make sure we get a good mixture of submissions in all the sections, there are some rules about how many of each type you can turn in per issue.

Points
You can earn 60 points per issue. You could do that through writing articles or by doing a combination of different types of submission.

Articles (Unlimited)
This covers Wizarding News, Informative Articles, Opinion Pieces/Reviews and Columns. You can submit as many articles as you like but remember that you can only earn 60 points per issue.
Articles must be a minimum of 150 words long. There is no maximum length but if the editors think your article is too long for people to comfortably read, we’ll talk to you about possibly covering the topic in multiple articles.
We'll be measuring based on the words you write yourself. Large quotations from other sources or responses from other people won't count towards the official wordcount, though in the case of interviews we may up the points to account for the thought and energy you've put in.
You can earn 10 points for articles of 150 words or more, 15 points for articles of 200 words or more and 20 points for articles of 300 words or more. The maximum you can earn for a single article is 20.

Graphics (6 per issue)
You can earn 5 points per graphic featured in the main part of the paper. That includes illustrations for articles, graphic based puzzles and ads. You must follow the guidelines given in the Graphics FAQ.
You may submit 6 graphics per issue (for a total of 30 points). Only 2 of those can be puzzles.
This limit does not include artwork submitted to the Creative Showcase as that’s calculated separately. If you submit a written puzzle (like a logic puzzle) then you may still only submit 1 other puzzle for that issue but it wouldn’t take up one of your 6 graphics slots.

Creative Showcase (2 per issue)
Submissions to the creative showcase are worth 10 points each. Creative writing submissions must be at least 150 words long for short stories and 10 lines long for poetry.

If you have any questions or need help calculating how many points something would be worth, please reach out to the editors.
